Criminal Justice Budget Essay

Harris County, in Houston Texas, contains a really enormous populace, and a vast dominant part of that populace delegated mortgage holders. Harris county’s geographic size is impressively huge, with a populace gauge surpassing 3,935,855 people groups in 2007 (US Census Bureau, 2009). Moreover, the level of Caucasians is around 73. 6%, with the Black populace comprising of 18. 9%, Native Americans surpassing . 6%, Asian people around 5. 5% and ultimately the Hispanic populace being around 38. 6% (US Census Bureau, 2009). The land region per 200 square miles is 1,728. Harris County’s current government going through financial plan for the time of 2007 is around 21, 152, 659. While deciding a spending plan for Harris County, one significant viewpoint to consider is the county’s retail deals, which is around 39,358,036, showing the current of industry and financial development. The government spent more than 19 billion dollars in 2003 on the war on drugs, at a pace of around 600 dollars for each second (www. drugsense. organization). The aggregate sum of cash spent on the war on drugs at the government level is about 4,258,600,939, while at the state level 6,536,936,825, totaling over 10,800,600,300 dollars (www. drugsense. com). The bombed war on drugs has not halted tranquilize use, despite what might be expected, it has made criminal cartels rich by illegalizing drugs, in this manner giving them an item to sell, and expanded the accessibility and power of medications, in any case, additionally their pace of use the nation over. For instance, after the US has spent more than 500 billion dollars to battle drugs, cocaine is currently as modest as it was when boss Escobar passed on and all the more intensely utilized, moreover, methamphetamine, which was grain even an issue in the years following 1993, is presently utilized by more than 1. 5 million Americans and is demonstrated to be more addictive than split (Wells, 2007). The war on drugs has put more than 500,000 individuals in jail for sedate wrongdoings with no discernable impact on the medication dealing industry, on the off chance that anything; it has developed (Wells, 2007). While setting up a financial plan for Harris County, the most significant thing that should be possible is finishing the bombed war on drugs, which would spare citizens an expected 12 billion dollars or progressively a year. Moreover, rather than centering a larger part of the states government financial plan on building more detainment facilities start constructing more colleges, and private networks. I think that its fascinating to take note of that the yearly expense to citizens in California to keep and keep up their penitentiaries is around 10 billion every year, if this spending pattern proceeds; California will spend more on detainment facilities than on colleges (Abramsky, 2007). In completion the war on drugs, with the billions that would be spared, tax reductions, business impetuses, and a general increment in the way of life for the network. Besides, rather than building detainment facilities, states could manufacture genuine, industry that produces’ genuine products. Photographic portraiture Essay Example For Students

Photographic representation Essay - Recent and Current Trends and Influences in Portrait Photography-Many picture takers in the past have had dynamic professions that have impacted numerous best in class photographic artists and will for quite a long time to come. Since their work at the time has been protected in uplifting and inventive pictures of their times rock legends and social symbols, likenesses yet movements can been seen through a correlation of photographic artists, for example, David Bailey, Anne Liebovitz and Rankin one of todays most talked picture takers. David Baileys profession was at a high between the long periods of 1957 and 1969 and was generally well known for his striking high contrast pictures of symbols including John lennon and Paul McCartney; Mick Jagger, Jean Shrimpton and the Kray Twins. Right now Bailey was making a progressive movement to 35mm cameras toward the start of the 60s. The SLR camera Bailey bought in 61 permitted him the adaptability to slacken up the style kind. For instance on of his initial style goes for Vogue Young thought goes west highlighted Jean Shrimpton in the confused urban condition of New York. These photos embodied another road authenticity and denoted an uncommon takeoff from the Static officially presented design and representation photography of the earlier decade. Baileys mapping of the 60s was set apart by two assortments of representations; David Baileys Box of Pin-ups in 1965 and Goodbye Baby and Amen in 1969. Incredible pictures of artists including Mick Jagger, Lennon and McCartney mi rror the height of these 60s media legends in these volumes. What's more, on-screen characters, for example, Michael Caine and Marianne Faithful. Alongside models Jean Shrimpton and Sue Murray. Baileys representations are portrayed by close editing, solid lighting and frequently obvious, uncovered foundations; which have given them an emotional and suffering force. With the majority of his models Bailey had an exceptionally close compatibility that carried a specific degree of closeness to his photos, which was remarkable among his counterparts. A few instances of his work can be seen on page six. In these models you can unmistakably observe Baileys basic yet particular style, the two little photos of Michael Caine and Mick Jagger obviously show that Bailey has lit the subject with it is possible that a couple softboxes from the front or 45 degrees and has likewise lit the foundation unequivocally to permit the model to stand apart more plainly from the foundation. Baileys photos ap pear to be very differentiating and he utilizes very brutal side lighting on Micheal Caine it causes the character to seem, by all accounts, to be solid and undermining which may have been Baileys expectation. Bailey stays still as dynamic as could be and has proceeding with significance as a picture photographic artist clear in his contemporary photos of Naomi Campbell, Amber Valetta, Johnny Depp and Ralph Fiennes. Anne Liebovitz whose profession must be famous for her work for Rolling Stones magazine was spread during the time of 1970 to 1990, and the same Bailey she had a nearby affinity with a considerable lot of her models and frequently found them in characteristic napping minutes. Her representations were altogether different from her peers, she infrequently utilized studio set-ups and in any event, when she did they were dissimilar to and customary pictures. Anne attempted to catch a side of the VIPs and symbols that had never been seen and frequently made a strange looking second. Her style was altogether different from Baileys, rather than close editing and unmistakable foundations which was a very much utilized procedure in Baileys studios; she would give each demonstrate an alternate character and look to what the open eye knew about. A significant number of her photos utilize the body just as the face as a methods for demeanor, which is uncommon for a portraitist. One of her pictures, which speak to the time quite well, is one of Arnold Schwarzenegger taken in 1979. It is an amazing portrayal of the hard and fast fixation on self-support and rec center madness that occurred in the eighties. Conversely its so extraordinary to the representations where all you find in a body reinforcement that most people appear to require. Annes pictures speak to individuals identifying with one another in a non-protective way; this is just conceivable on account of the cozy connections she has with her models. Perhaps the best case of her work is the last picture of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. This speaks to the cozy relationship she had the option to work with her models and furthermore utilizing the fetal position gives her utilization of the human body as a methods for articulation, this representation is solid graphically but sincerely it makes an amazing picture without anyone else. In a considerable lot of her pictures a portion of her hardware can be seen, for instance: lighting, stands, sceneries she causes the shoots to appear to be easygoing and manage. Numerous picture takers have attempted to import this style in to their work. Anne utilizes the environmental factors in her representations to speak to a side of her models vocation or character that has never been seen. Her subjects run from being on visit with the Rolling Stones to representations of Bette Midler, Liberace, on-screen character Amanda Plummer, Clint Eastwood and Bruce Springsteen. What's more, as of late was the picture taker mentioned to visit with super gathering Oasis. Unique Paragraph EssayA resemblance can be found in the entirety of the discussed picture takers work for the most part since they were and are especially in the awesome scene! Particularly Anne Liebovitz and David Bailey, in spite of the fact that they worked in an unexpected way. David Bailey the same Rankin utilizes basic sets and lighting methods where as then again; Liebovitz may appear to utilize basic lighting and studio set-ups. Everything is deliberately positioned and lit, and she is known for her confused lighting methods, some may state she is a fussbudget or perhaps an over the top. Every one of these picture takers I have discussed are solid and free characters every one of which doesn't search for endorsement or applause from their work. They are on close to home missions and excursions to perceive how far their psyche will extend in to the new and never done. List of sources: www. When Do Your Mental Powers Peak

When Do Your Mental Powers Peak Theories Cognitive Psychology Print When Do Your Mental Powers Peak in Life? Learn about our editorial policy Kendra Cherry Updated on December 07, 2019 Frazer Hudson / Getty Images More in Theories Cognitive Psychology Behavioral Psychology Developmental Psychology Personality Psychology Social Psychology Biological Psychology Psychosocial Psychology At what point in your life do different mental powers peak? Some of the earliest intelligence tests simply categorized all people over the age of 16 as adults. Today, researchers recognize that the brain continues to develop and change throughout early adulthood and that there are significant changes in how the brain functions as people age. Still, we often tend to think of the adult brain as a relatively stable and unchanging thing, suggesting that various mental abilities are simply static, or even on the decline, throughout most of adulthood. Conventional ideas about intelligence often suggest that people hit their mental peak fairly early in life and then follow a long, slow decline into old age. There is also a tendency to believe that certain mental abilities, such as fluid intelligence, typically peak relatively early in adulthood. Crystallized intelligence, on the other hand, is  often suggested to peak during late adulthood. According to some experts, this long-held dichotomy might be far too simplistic. Researchers Joshua Hartshorne and Laura Germine utilized a large pool of online participants to gather information about exactly what ages certain mental abilities are the strongest. What they discovered was that there was a surprising consistency to when particular abilities typically peak. Some Mental Abilities Peak Much Later in Life According to the study published in the journal Psychological Science, different aspects of fluid intelligence peak at different ages, with some abilities hitting their apex as late as age 40. “At any given age, you’re getting better at some things, you’re getting worse at some other things, and you’re at a plateau at some other things. There’s probably not one age at which you’ve peaked on most things, much less all of them,” explained researcher Joshua Hartshorne of MIT and one of the studys authors. Hartshorne had previously found that visual short-term memory peaks in the mid-30s before beginning to go down. In a 2011 study, Germine found that the ability to recognize faces also improves until people are in their early 30s and then begins to gradually decline. Digging deeper, the two began looking at archival data from older intelligence tests. What they discovered was that there appeared to be no single mental peak. Instead, different abilities seemed to peak at wildly different and sometimes surprising ages. These results helped inspire their further investigation into how mental abilities change with age. Large Online Samples Offered a Unique Look at Mental Abilities The latest study was able to draw on a large online sample of participants who utilized the websites gameswithwords.org and testmybrain.org. Using the approach, the researchers were able to gather data from nearly 50,000 people across a wide range of ages. Four different types of cognitive tasks were used as well as one task that looked at the ability to detect the emotional states of other people. Hartshorne and Germines earlier research had shown that these tasks measured mental abilities that change as people age. The results revealed what the researchers called considerable heterogeneity in when cognitive abilities peak. When Do Mental Powers Peak? Among the key findings from the latest study and earlier research: 18-19: Information-processing speed peaks early, then immediately begins to decline.25: Short-term memory gets better until around age 25. It remains fairly steady until it begins to decline around age 35.30: Memory for faces peaks and then starts to gradually decline.35: Your short-term memory begins to weaken and decline.40s-50s: Emotional understanding peaks in middle to later adulthood.60s: Vocabulary abilities continue to increase.60s and 70s: Crystallized intelligence, or accumulated knowledge and facts about the world, peaks late in life. While the results that crystallized intelligence peaks later in life are consistent with earlier findings, this study implies that this peak occurs much later in life than previously believed. What could explain this late peak in mental abilities? The researchers suggest that their results might be due to the fact that people today have more education, greater access to information, and more mentally demanding jobs than did previous generations of adults. The results suggest that while older brains might indeed be slower, they are likely to still be more accurate, knowledgeable, and better able to assess the moods and emotional states of others. The researchers are continuing their online research by introducing more cognitive tasks as well as tests designed to measure language abilities, executive function, and social and emotional intelligence. They also agree that further investigations are needed to determine exactly why mental powers peak at different ages. We took the existing theories that were out there and showed that they’re all wrong. The question now is: What is the right one? To get to that answer, we’re going to need to run a lot more studies and collect a lot more data,” said Hartshorne.

Definition Of Absurdism In The Stranger By Albert Camus

The definition of absurdism is stated on Merriam-Webster dictionary as the â€Å"philosophy theory about the belief that the universe is irrational and meaningless, the search for order brings the individual into conflict with the universe† ( Merriam Webster). Meursault does not show any feelings towards his mother death which confuses the audience. In any other story Meursault would be regretting the time he did not spend on his mother. He put his mother into a nursing home and basically left her without looking back, then when his other dies he just shrugged it off. Meursault does not care about his mother death or it seems. Why Did a Stalemate Develop on the Western Front free essay sample

Why did a stalemate develop on the Western Front? Stalemate during war is when no action can be taken or progress made. The Stalemate on the Western front, a line of trenches stretching from the Swiss Alps all the way across France to Nieuwpoort in Belgium, was a dilemma that was not foreseen by either the allies or Germany. Originally it had been predicted that the war would be over after a quick and decisive battle, this perception was quickly diminished once the war had begun. No one reason explains why the situation on the western front developed into a stalemate but many factors can be considered. The developments in weaponry have been said to have contributed to the Stalemate. In the early twentieth century many new and effective weapons were being developed. Long range heavy artillery had been proved much more effective than the mounted rifle wielding soldiers of previous centuries. The allies and Germany were both caught up in this weaponry boom. This â€Å"race† for new technology led to the two sides being approximately evenly matched, because of this neither side could make much head way. Also, the Generals in charge of the troops were mostly aged officers whose knowledge of modern weapons was limited. The fast moving nature of modern warfare had taken them by and led to rather outdated methods being used. So even though new weapons were evadible if they were not used effectively they were useless. The problem with advanced warfare and having similar types of weapons was that it was really machine against machine thus getting an upper hand was virtually impossible. Problems in communications also contributed towards the stalemate because the connections between the front line, the artillery and the Commanders were very poor. Most of the Generals were stationed several miles away from the front line, due to this they could not get a clear idea of what was going on amongst the troops. This delay and confusion on the battlefield made it hard to get an objective perspective on the battle. Sometimes the different nationalities such as the French and British found it hard communicating with one another this made it difficult to co-ordinate and pass on orders. As a result of all this the messages taken from the commanders to the front line were often out of date by the time they reached the trenches. The failure of the Schlieffen plan played one of the most important roles in bringing about the stalemate on the western front. Firstly, Russian forces had mobilised much faster than previously supposed they would, this miscalculation meant that Germany had to redeploy troops to the eastern front when they still needed the force to defeat France. Due to this Germanys forces were stretched and did not have the man power to break the French lines, all they could do to stop themselves from being pushed back through the Franco-German border was entrench. This resulted in the two forces entering a state of static warfare, fighting in this way makes it virtually impossible to gain any land. Secondly, the Germany army was slowed down by Belgium. The Germans had assumed that the Belgians would not put up a fight because their country was neutral. This was not the case as Belgium decided to fight, poorly equipped as they were. This did not stop the Germans but it did give the French troops time to prepare, thus losing the German troops the element of surprise. Lastly, because the German troops had advanced so fast through Belgium their supply trains had found it hard to keep up with the troops this resulted in them being under equipped and poorly prepared. The outcome of the battle of the Marne was one of the most important causes of the stalemate. As the French effort to attack across the border failed they resorted to a retreat to defend Paris. As a result of this the German forces were obliged to quit their arcing motion to meet the French at the river Marne. The relatively well equipped French were fighting on their own land and the Germans, as explained above were poorly prepared and had a severe shortage of men. When a gap was spotted between the German Second and First Armies by reconnaissance planes the French and British forces took advantage of the situation by launching a night time attack which served to separate the two armies even further. When it looked like the Germany would be almost entirely encircled and destroyed, they retreated, pursued by the French and British, to just north of the river Aisne where they built trenches that were to last for several years. This act effectively destroyed the Schlieffen plan and ended the so called war of movement. After the First Battle of the Marne, both Allied and German forces began a series of outflanking manoeuvres to try to get behind the enemy. As each manoeuvre was blocked they moved further through France and eventually reached the coast. This later became known as the â€Å"Race to the sea†. As neither force could break the others lines the offensive came to a relative standstill. This would remain so for approximately the next four years. This lack of progress obviously played a major part in the route to the development of a stalemate on the western front. I have come to realise that there is no single cause behind the Stalemate that began in 1914 on the Western Front but many which all contributed to the eventual outcome. The long term effects of the failure of the Schlieffen plan however lead me to believe that this is the most important reason the stalemate developed as it did. Typos are expected in 2-star orders, but they shouldn’t take away from the meaning of a sentence, as in the example above where reading about psychics would not fit in with a love of science, or the overall theme of the order. Running your article through the spelling and grammar checker in Microsoft Word or a similar program will pick up many errors while any words you are unsure of deserve a quick check in the dictionary or at Merriam-Webster. Also, watch out for colloquialisms and slang terms in formal writing as using them can add confusion to a broad audience of readers. As for punctuation and spacing, always place a period at the end of a complete sentence, and add a space after commas, semicolons, periods and other punctuation marks. Most Textbroker orders call for multiple paragraphs or sections. A paragraph is generally about three to five sentences, and leaving a blank space between paragraphs helps the overall prese ntation to the reader. Fused Sentences, Sentence Fragments and Comma Splices Example: I walked my dog yesterday the dog park is really fun, we go there all the time. Especially when it’s sunny.Correction: I walked my dog yesterday. The dog park is really fun, and we go there all the time, especially when it’s sunny. When a sentence is a fragment, an incomplete sentence, or combines multiple complete sentences without punctuation as in a fused or run-on sentence, it creates confusion for the reader and diminishes the point you are making within the article. Comma splices, which are similar to fused sentences but with commas, are also common among 2-star writing. Awkward Sentence Structure Example: Wanting to play outside, the broccoli on her plate needed to be finished first.Correction: She wanted to play outside but needed to finish the broccoli on her plate first.Sometimes, awkward sentences come from misplaced phrases. It makes sense. You’re trying to get the i nformation on the page, and not every sentence will come out right the first time as in the above example. This is where proofreading, going back over your work to check for errors, helps you make corrections and create logical thoughts. If you find yourself having trouble with clear sentences, this site offers tips on sentence structure and mechanics. Errors at the 3-star Level When you’re at the 3-star level, your argument might be clear, but it’s still hindered from rising to the level of 4-star writing by grammar obstacles like homonym errors, comma mistakes and filler—a writing style that presents its own set of issues with passive voice, redundancy and leading the article off-topic. Homonyms and Common Misspellings Example: You’re decision to drop out of school defiantly doesn’t effect me.Correction: Your decision to drop out of school definitely doesn’t affect me. In addition to missing typos that actually spell other words correctly, like â€Å"defiantly† and â€Å"definitely,† 3-star level misspellings often come in the form of homonym errors. These words sound alike but have different meanings and are not spelled the same. Two of the most common might be â€Å"your,† as in something that belongs to you, and â€Å"you’re,† which is a contraction of â€Å"you are.† Here’s a list of other easily confused words like â€Å"their,† â€Å"there,† and â€Å"they’re.† Comma Use and Parts of Speech—Sometimes Example: If she had listened to the traffic report, she would have taken side streets, and arrived on time to work.Correction: If she had listened to the traffic report, she wouldn’t have taken the freeway and arrived on time to work.Typically, 3-star writing shows understanding of comma usage about half the time. In the above sentence, the introductory comma is correct, but a comma that appears before a coordinating conjunct ion is only used when both clauses are independent. A basic grasp of grammar, such as proper article use (a/an/the) and consistent subject/verb agreement, help make the writing clear at this level, although more complex punctuation like semicolons, colons and hyphens are more of a challenge. Filler Example: This incredible product makes a variety of foods that suit your needs.Correction: This toaster oven not only perfectly heats your toast in the morning but warms up last night’s pizza for lunch, making it practical for any meal. Filler is anything that does not add value to your article. This can be in the form of repetitive phrasing or ideas, being vague as in the example above or making obvious or irrelevant statements. The last of these often takes the article off-topic. Another characteristic of filler is the use of passive voice, which takes the action out of a sentence and often distances the reader from your argument or topic. Examine Your Writing Process How you ap proach your article will make a difference in the quality of your content. Since making a clear statement to your audience is at the heart of all writing, try making these three things part of your process on the path to improvement.1. Comprehension: When you start writing, check that you understand your topic. Read and research thoroughly, and then, summarize what you’ve learned. This will help not only prevent plagiarism but clarify that you know your subject. If you have time, don’t be afraid to walk away from your summary or a first draft, even if only for five minutes, so that you return to your writing with fresh eyes.2. Reading out loud: If you’re working somewhere that it’s permitted, read your article out loud to catch awkward sentence construction and ensure logical flow. You’re more likely to gloss over something if you’re reading it silently.3. Spell check: Before you hit submit, give your text one last run through a spelling and grammar checker. It’s worth it.

English Literature, beginning to Romantic Period. Dialogue Essay

English Literature, beginning to Romantic Period. Dialogue - Essay Example Although Satan as a protagonist may not be the object of admiration as other heroes do, there are some admirable qualities of determination. Satan is also compellingly complex and manages to strike a majestic attitude, not threatened by death or conflict. In The Canterbury Tale, The Wife of Bath tells us how she uses her experience with men to achieve anything she wants. She glorifies her ability to control the institution of marriage, and that she has married several times five men. To her, marrying these five men is not only normal but is acceptable in the bible. Me: welcome guys to our today’s discussion on your roles on earth. Several questions have been raised why you operate the way you do and why you torment those who do not agree with you in one way or the other. What can you say about these allegations? Satan: Thank you, as you I am Satan, the only person who has the ability to challenge our enemies. A man must be able to free his mind; otherwise he would simply be an empty shell with no purpose. That’s why I have to help man think freely, without restrictions by showing him the way to life. The Wife of Bath: Thank you for this forum, I’m here as a testimony of how a free mind can help free humankind’s mind (she wears a broad infectious smile). When Satan talks about the need to establish a free mind, I’m an example of what a free mind can achieve. Satan: (nodes his head in agreement) that’s why heav’n isn’t the right place for mankind, where you’ll be dup’t into believing that you’re free, yet in reality you become a slave of one’s way of thinking. Me: Well, (facing Satan) the last time you disagreed with God you had disobeyed him. You went ahead and started a war that you lost. Instead of picking yourself up and to wage another war, you wage war on mankind by duping them to follow your wicked ways (Milton 6). Satan: (trying hard to control his apparent angered

Strong debate about the advantages and disadvantages of fair-value Assignment

Strong debate about the advantages and disadvantages of fair-value accounting - Assignment Example These are the estimates that they would get if they were to sell the financial instruments in this case assets and liabilities. The companies report profits or losses when the value of their assets increase or their liabilities decreases. The losses decrease the value of the net income and hence the reported equity also reduces. Fair values have played a crucial role in United States for more than half a century. The standards of accounting that allow or otherwise require fair value reporting have increased in a big way over the recent years. In 2006, a controversial and important new standard of accounting was announced by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) no. 157, which provides a more detailed guidance in assisting firms in the use of fair values. The applicability of this has in recent years been put into test by market conditions which were extreme. Fair value was used as early as the late nineteenth century where it was common for organizations to use appraised values in quantifying their capital assets. In other words it was the value that would be realized by their sale in the market. This exit value was also believed by the economists, to be the most appropriate in construction of financial statements. (See, among others, Diewert, 2005). However, the abuse of this accounting standard by managers eventually led to the enactment of more accounting standards that were more formal by the accounting profession. This led to the emergence of historical cost as the dominant standard for reporting the financial instruments; assets and liabilities. Despite this, fair value remained a preferred concept by many theorists in the field (Magnan, 2009, p. 191). For example, Staubus (1961) and Sterling (1970) argue in support of fair values in financial reporting (p 192), which is the realizable value of the financial instrument. The exit value in accounting was used as a default option when accounting for some assets, however, it re-entered the

Business Structure Of Blizzard Entertainment

Business Structure Of Blizzard Entertainment This report is a in-depth look at Blizzard Entertainment the company, to find out why Blizzard entertainment is so successful in the gaming industry. We will look at the reasons on how it could come out with best selling games over and over again and how they manage to sell 2.4 million copies of one game within the first 24 hours. Furthermore, we will understand how Blizzard entertainment runs such a big company to such efficiency using the business model SWOT and PEST in the analysis of its success. A look at the current developments and what future developments it might have or where it can go from here will be discussed as well. Well, Blizzard Entertainment was not always as we had known it, originally founded in 1991 February as Silicon Synapse by Chairman Allen Adham, president Michael Morhaime and vice president Frank Pearce All Graduates from UCLA. In the days of Silicon Synapse it was more on focused on making game ports for other Gaming studios. Until the Breakthrough Game The Lost Vikings, it was hailed as one of the forefathers of that Game Genre . A year after that they released Rock Roll Racing another Cult Hit that paved the way for its predecessors in the Racer Shooter Genre. In 1994 It was only then its name was reestablished as Blizzard Entertainment. The first big scale game it released by Blizzard Entertainment, was Warcraft: Orcs HYPERLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warcraft:_Orcs__HumansHYPERLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warcraft:_Orcs__Humans Humans and it was a hit with the gamers. Ever since they have made a benchmark in the game, the gaming world was at their fingertips now. After such success with Blizzard Entertainments original Warcraft game, Warcraft: Orcs HYPERLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warcraft:_Orcs__HumansHYPERLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warcraft:_Orcs__Humans Humans , was touted as one of the best strategy games of 1994, and the games epic sequel, 1995s Warcraft II : Tides Of Darkness, won numerous awards, including the companys first Game of the Year award. Warcraft III :Reign Of Chao ss, released in July 2002, has likewise won several accolades , just like Starcraft another hit Game Series released by Blizzard Entertainment, It has become a staple of professional tournament gaming, along with its expansion, the award-winning Warcraft III : The Frozen Throne, which was released in July 2003. II. Current Projects and a look at the rise of WOW ( World Of Warcraft) Well Blizzard has many notable achievements in its released games, None of it comes close To World Of Warcraft, more widely known as WOW. It is no longer just a game but is now a genuine phenomenon, and one that shows no signs of abating. It is one of the key games of recent times, and stands as a landmark title for online gaming. World of Warcraft is the forth title in the series of Warcraft games, which has been entertaining people for over a decade To understand more about the appeal of World of Warcraft, let us recall the time when WOW was released. It was not merely some massively multiplayer online role-playing game. It created a truly engaging online world set in the heart of Azeroth, a fantastic land that is filled with heroes and monsters and many other creatures. The games strength is that it functions as an experience, as a world that exists on its own terms that you may visit and explore as you please. The game sold more than 240,000 copies in its first 24 hours on the market, more than any other PC game in history. Since then it released two other expansion sets which was a greater success then the one before. Blizzard is also making attempt to diversify beyond their original aim of just making games. Blizzard Entertainment is currently working with Legendary Pictures in making a live action Warcraft movie. They see this as an individual responsibility as well as the companys. Employees can count on their peers, managers, and the company itself to be supportive and help them gain the knowledge and training they need. IV. A in-depth SWOT Analysis This Analysis will help us better understand of Blizzard Entertainments Success and its weaknesses. Using The SWOT Analysis model we can see the opportunities and revaluate the strategies to cope with its weaknesses. Strengths Good market position globally One of the very best pc game developers and held in high esteem by its customers. Very large age group from its larger customer base. Takes Feedback from its players and customers quickly and seriously. Developed World Of Warcraft to huge success and acclaim. Weaknesses May lack some competitive edge in some market segments over rival companies Relies on its current game titles more than it should. Very slow to release its games, often over the stipulated release date. Opportunities Business can be further diversified into other industries, example, making a film which it is trying to do now. Acquire more gaming sectors. More varied games. Look at a brand new type of pc game to boomz everyone away. Opening up of other global markets, getting more customers worldwide further. Working together with another pc gaming company to have a co-project. Threats Other big pc game producing companies, might pose some competition with maybe more attractive graphics or different game genres, Example, FPS. The time it takes to release a game might turn some gamers off, or they might just stop waiting all together. Limited experience in other industries it might want to diversify into Piracy 3rdparty clients such as Garena, lancraft blueserver and many others. Strengths Blizzard Entertainment has a good market position globally, meaning in the games market it has a huge cut of the customers and transactions that happen in it. Blizzard Is very well respected by the gamers, customers and other companies alike for their awesome games which are well designed and enjoyable for a very wide age group. When Blizzard comes out with a new game other companies will always try to better it learning from its strengths. From kids to adults, blizzard games have players every age range, making it well welcomed by all. Blizzard Entertainment leaves no gamer from the casual gamer to hardcore, professional gamer satisfied. The games Are simple enough and fast for the casual gamer to play, but also well balanced with good competitive potential. Intact, World Cyber Games (WCG) the worlds largest scale gaming competition has 2 Blizzard Entertainment games to compete in, Namely Starcraft 2, Warcraft 3 and Dota, which is a custom map made from Warcraft 3. Blizzard Entertainments World Of Warcraft easily overshadows all of its accomplishments with 12 million subscribers and increasing. Making it the most played online MMORPG, no small feat without its dedicated team of staff. If a bug is reported or game defect , blizzard will take it seriously and respond quickly to look into the problem and solve the issue. Weaknesses While Blizzard Entertainment is certainly a very successful company but it is not perfect or infallible. One of its Weaknesses is its most of its games revolve around the same genre of the real time strategy (RTS) or Role Playing Games (RPG). Some game diversity would be a fresh change and might get into a bigger cut of the market and different gamer groups. On top of that Blizzards Entertainments game graphics might be less visual compared to other games therefore might have less competitive edge in some market segments over rival companies example sports gaming or fps. Though Blizzard Entertainment has very good games it keeps expanding on the already expanded game stories, example Warcraft which has great gameplay and good storyline, however it Blizzard keep concentrating on the same story and how to make a better installment people might get bored to keep playing the same story thats over extended or stretched. While Blizzard Entertainment are showing great signs of market diversification by trying to make a movie, their experience is very little in that field and almost non-existent. Might hit many glitches and problems along the way it might hard to solve with little experience. Which Blizzard Entertainment is attempting to avoid by working with a experience movie company, Legendary Films. Everyone agrees that Blizzard Entertainment makes great games, but another thing they agree is they take a really long to do that often over the stipulated release date. An impatient customer is never a happy customer. Game Quality should never be compromised but still the releases could be faster. Opportunities No doubt Blizzard Entertainment is very successful in its games and products, it can further diversify into other game genres it might not have touched, example sports gaming or FPS. Warcraft has a very rich storyline and might be good as a comic or book, gaining more exposure for Blizzard Entertainment as well in the process. Gameplay improvements and Graphical improvements to its current games with patches or when a new game comes out because the gaming industry is always improving, and gamers demand more every time. Look at a brand new game Genre with a totally new gaming engine of which the likes were never seen before and Blizzard Entertainment is on its way to another great selling game. Working with another experienced gaming company will help expand its horizons and its pool of talent, with more ideas and more funding, Blizzard Entertainment has a great global market share and good global coverage, but there are still countries that have not even heard of it, with the expanding global market and opening of markets, it would be a great time to reach even more countries. Blizzard Entertainment is currently working with Legendary Pictures, the studio behind the feature films such as Watchmen, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Superman Returns, and 300, in making of a live-action Warcraft movie. Threats Blizzard Entertainment faces serious competition from other companies that have some game genres that other gamers find more fun, example FPS. On top of that though Warcraft 3 has great cinematics, its in game graphics cant be compared. So many other games out there with much better graphics. EA games has Tiberiam Wars with much better graphics but of the same RTS genre , how about Relic Gamings Company of Heros. The Time it takes for Blizzard Entertainment to release its games is a great internal threat, for it may lose many loyal customers that got sick of waiting for the usually delayed games. Customers hate to wait unnecessarily and may buy other games instead. Blizzard Entertainment move into diversifying its market by moving into the movie industry which it has little experience, and requires a lot of funding. By going into other Game Genres its not familiar with also can be a risky move that might spell disaster by spreading itself too thin. Piracy is without a doubt one of the greatest threats to Blizzard Entertainment, infact to any industry that relies on the IP law. File Sharing is now everywhere and very easily accessible, one can even get the game without going out of his home and without spending a single cent for the game. Piracy costs Blizzard Entertainment millions of dollars every year. Why would people pay if they can get it free? Along with Piracy is 3rd party clients that make it possible for the games to be played online for free without the need for a original cd-key. In the past without these programs playing online with a pirated game would be impossible, and that would be one of the reasons why original games where still popular for the fact it had a cd-key that allows it to be played online. With these programs it bypasses all these security measures and there is no longer the need to pay for the game. V. Final SWOT Evaluation It is clear enough from this evaluation that Blizzard Entertainment has a very successful business model, but at the same time has so much more that it could improve on and diversify into. The very rich storyline of Warcraft has so much potential from movies to books to comics to Television series. The move that Blizzard Entertainment decided to make by working on a Warcraft movie was a good market decision to capture the growing movie industry and movie fans. Its lack in experience in the industry is offset by doing the movie with a more experienced movie company Legendary Pictures, the studio behind the feature films such as Watchmen, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Superman Returns, and 300, with a proven track record. But it should be warned that yes Blizzard Entertainment can go into other industries, but it must not neglect its main market share the gamers, and some hardcore fans might be turned off by the change Blizzard Entertainment. The Strengths are many and can be further worked upon by looking at the same game with different angles. Continuing to make games based on the gamers demand would be the best bet, for that means their games will always be in demand. The threats and weaknesses are numerous as well, however with the right well thought strategies they can be avoided and countered to keep Blizzard Entertainment ahead in the gaming world. However the greatest threat is Piracy and 3rd party clients, which in the case the saying if you cant beat them , join em doing business with the 3rd party clients might help Blizzard Entertainment gain back its lost profits from the programs and piracy. VI. Conclusion Blizzard Entertainment is a great game developer, and to continue in a increasing volatile market it has to keep changing to meet the demands of the new world. But if it continues to deliver its mission statement Dedicated to creating the most epic entertainment experiencesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦.ever following its 8 core values. I dont doubt and not for a second that Blizzard Entertainment will continue deliver gaming experiences that redefine gaming.

Report from an Interview with a Muslim-American Woman

Oftentimes, personal narratives can become the grounding point for theoretical research. Experiences reflect the social tendencies of an individual or a community. Here social tendencies deal about the overall capacity of an individual or group to adapt to the social environment. It also includes the ability to maintain beliefs (or ideologies) and protect personal or group aspirations. Thus, a thorough study of social tendencies may provide the researcher knowledge about the nature of a given individual or community. Although the individual is an entity by itself; that is, it have an existence independent of a given group, the cultural values of such an individual usually reflect the cultural values of the community he/she originated. Thus, it can be said that personal values are often influenced by collective values. The tendency of an individual to move in certain manners is in part influenced by his/her capacity to incorporate societal values and practices. Thus, inference becomes a tool for extracting genuine data. Although uncertainties may be present (as to the reliability of the data procured), we may also assume that such uncertainties were borne out of pre-judged propositions. Remember that in the real world, propositions have no truth values unless tested by empirical research. In my case, I chose to study Muslim American communities in order to examine the conditions of this particular ethnic group in the United States. I really want to examine the specific problems, aspirations, social and economic conditions of this group of people. Rather than providing a lengthy description of the chosen community, I chose to interview an individual from that community. My best choice for the interview was an 80-year old woman who called himself Tiger Lily and usually wore huge, flamboyant hats every day. She often danced around the senior center with a wooden marionette from the center’s thrift shop just for the laughs she got. For a stranger, she may be labeled a crazy old lady (an eccentric individual who wants all the attention of people focused to her), but for the community (Muslim-American) she was the joy of the community. Her cheerfulness often got into the lives of every person in the community. Certainly, this person would be the most viable person for an interview. The range of data I could procure from her is very big. Thus, I began constructing an interview outline which would be used in the interview. I came into the house of the old lady and asked her permission for an interview. She asked me the purpose of the interview. I told her that the interview was part of the course requirements. Added to that, the interview would serve as the parting point for describing Muslim-American communities (in the United States). She told me to come back to the next day. She promised that she would prepare a delicious launch for both of us. I came back to the house of Tiger Lily. I got a little nervous and excited. I felt a little disoriented because I might offend the old lady from the questions that I would be asking in the interview. â€Å"The bitter pill is necessary† was the thought running in my mind. So when the old lady asked me to sit down, I willingly obeyed. For Muslim-Americans, respect for individual dignity is one of the greatest virtues. I thanked the old lady for approving the interview. She said that it was her duty to share her knowledge of the community to students like me. What she did not know that the interview was not about the community per se. It was about her in relation to the community. Her personal narrative would serve as the grounding point for a deeper analysis of her community. I did not show any sign of faltering. For me, an interview is not just a question and answer procedure. It is the blood life of a qualitative research. Without further ad due, I began the interview. The first part of the interview dealt with the social life of Tiger Lily. Here are some transcripts of the interview: Question: People usually call you Tiger Lily. What does Tiger Lily stands for? Are they connected with your personal attributes? Tiger Lily: I really do not know why people call me Tiger Lily. Probably because most of the people in the community perceive me as a person who could get along with everybody. Personally, I view myself as a strong woman who possesses the qualities of a fine lady. Well, that’s Tiger and Lily for sure. Question: Do you consider yourself a liberated woman; that is, a modern woman? Tiger Lily: I don’t know if I can classify myself as a modern woman. There are some things in this country I find really intriguing. There are also some things I find fine. However, I am generally conservative in worldview. Family life, the community, and of course my personal views are the finest things in life. Maybe, that’s a conservative outlook. Question: Does your religion (Islam) affect your way of life, your approach to people? Tiger Lily: There is so much in my religion that affects (sic) my way of life. In our community, everybody is expecting from everybody. Solidarity is the most cherished values for Muslims like us. One should not be detached from the community. Doing so, would give one a headache. Islam is a way of life. It is life connected and governed by the laws of Allah, the One-God. In any case, I am bound by my religion to stick to the beliefs of my community. There is no alternative but obedience. Living outside the community for a Muslim is like living in a dark cave. You have the impression that you are different. Question: Are you aware that people perceive you as different? Tiger Lily: That’s their view. I find interacting with people a lot beneficial than isolating myself in my house. For us Muslims, interaction is the key to a fulfilling life. As what I have (sic) earlier, there is no alternative. Maybe, my way of interacting with other people is different. The purpose is the same though. The second part dealt with Tiger Lily’s perception of the community she belongs (and some of the problem the community encounter).   Here are some transcripts of the interview. Question: What is your perception of your community? Tiger Lily: One, happy big family. We usually celebrate birthdays and holidays with the members of the community. Even though those nasty white policemen always suspect one of our fellows in various crimes, we console each other. That’s one way of showing respect and dignity to our fellows. Question: What are some of the problems your community is currently facing? Tiger Lily: Maybe unemployment is the most pervasive problem in our community. Most of the young adults here are facing the difficulty of finding jobs because they are Muslims. After the 9/11 attack, many of the companies here are afraid of hiring Muslims even though they are also American citizens. I am really saddened by this instance. We also find it very difficult to interact with other people outside our community. Once they know that you are a Muslim, they turn their backs and refuse further correspondence. It’s really hard for us. What we can derive from this interview can be summed up in the following statements. Tiger Lily is a conservative folk who clings to the values of her community. The problems of the community are reflected on her personal narrative. She shows magnanimity and respect for the community because she believes in the efficacy of her religion (who greatly influences her life). Work Cited Interview with Tiger Lily (transcript). (2007). Conducted on 31 October 2007 with the consent of the interviewee.

Internet as a Form of Communication and Its Misconception

One of the most talked, known and controversial issues today is the Internet. Internet is a large network made up of a number of smaller networks. Almost every computer in an educational facility and in home and small office use is connected to some type of a network. People spent a lot of time on the Internet, which may make them seem isolated. However, the Internet does not foster isolation, because it may be used for many different things like communication, education, problem solving and etc. The concept for the Internet was to make a link in to a new world, a world that has many different opportunities within its self. To gives the people options to go to China, Italy, and Egypt without spending a lot of money on the trip. To open new experiences and ideas that are just a click of a button away. The idea of going on to the internet for almost every thing may make the person seem isolated. Isolated from people, form culture, from education, from communication to other people, but in reality they are not isolated. The internet gives variety. It might not give physical opportunity to visit Japan or Russia, but it gives almost the same emotional and cultural experiences. A person does not have to read a newspaper on the train or go to an art gallery to be cultured and not seem isolated; a person just has to do what feels right at a certain time. The Internet also gives a misconception about communication. Internet is a different world that has the idea of communication in a different perspective. To communicate people don†t have to see one another, or hear one another they just have to be able to understand one another. The Internet provides just that. This may seem like isolation because no physical contact is present, and some or all of the things that are said might not be true. This is a misconception. People that are talking face to face with one another might be lying or might not be; the same is said for the Internet conversations. â€Å"People whose physical handicaps make it difficult to form new friendships find that virtual communities treat them as they always wanted to be treated† (Rheingold 206). Equality and understanding is the key, and the virtual community provides that and much more. Advice is also one of the keys for equality and understanding. As we all know advice in today†s world is not free, and most of the time you need to make an appointment to get that expansive help. The internet provides advice that is free and at the same time on the spot. In Urbana, Illinois, the Federal Department of Education has set up a network for parents, teachers, community workers, and etc. that have questions concerning children, financial assistance, educational assistance, and etc (Thomas). The Internet is not only for fun and games, but it is also for problem solving of all types. This is not the only site of this sort; Howard Reingold logged onto the Well, when he needed an answer in a matter of seconds. What amazed him when he logged on â€Å"wasn†t just the speed with which we obtained precisely the information we needed†¦it was also the immense inner sense of security that comes with discovering that real people†¦are available, around the clock, if you need them† (Rheingold 202). The idea of Internet advice may seem like isolation, but it is not. It helps people with real problems to get real advice. The ones giving advice once were getting some type of advice. The idea behind these help links are for real people to talk to real people not necessarily professionals, but with people who had real life experiences, and who see it on a more personal level. This gives emotional support to those who need it and trust that just comes along. Although the internet brings communication to different communities as well as different individuals, it also plays as an educational source. Many educational facilities are starting to conduct courses on the Internet. They are also using â€Å"Web pages to post class materials and other resources† (Mendels) for student on the Internet for faster and easier access by the students. Some educators are also requesting and requiring for their students to have an e-mail address. An e-mail address gives less paper work for the professor, and an easier access of the professor for questions and faster responses. Since the demand of computer knowledge has increased, this is a perfect way to start learning. The Internet also provides a wide variety of encyclopedias, newspapers, magazines, etc, for educational reasons, and the more people will use the Internet the more they will learn. Education does not have to be the old fashion way, it has to provide and teach different experiences th at may not otherwise be available. The Internet is a world that is available to each and every person, but how that person uses it, is how the opinion of isolation forms. If each and every person would use the Interne for education, than there would be too many educated people. We are all very lucky that we have so much opportunity in our access, but a lot of us don†t know how to use it, and for what. That†s where education plays a big role, it does two things at once gives general and computer knowledge. The more we learn the more we know, and isolation is not one of the thing that the Internet provides.
